Cantalao Proposal, Pablo Neruda memorial, Isla Negra Chile
project text:
From a vantage point midway down the road to Pablo Neruda’s Cabin, a scattered landscape of enigmatic objects coalesces to reveal the single, fl eeting word; amor. With another footstep, it dissolves again into fragments. Love is an anamorphosis of disparate bodies. A poem is an anamorphosis of disparate words. The life and words of Pablo Neruda were scattered across vast distances but always coalesced in love, for place, for humankind, amor.
The sculpture is composed of 20 steel elements scattered towards the distant edge of the site. The future road was identifi ed as a major axis of foot traffi c through the Cantalao site. The position and experience of the memorial is carefully calibrated to the visitors’ procession from the gate-house to Pablo Neruda’s Cabin. The 20 elements measure between 1.2 and 3M in height and occupy roughly 1M2 in plan. Made of weathering steel sheets (Cor-Ten), they would be plasma-cut, edge welded and ground smooth. From afar, the objects appear solid. Upon approach they would reveal a pattern of text cut from their surface. Apart from the steel elements, the project involves signifi cant landscape intervention, with the re- introduction of native fl ora, in conjunction with efforts that are set to occur elsewhere on the Cantalao site. A secondary footpath encloses this wild garden. Each object rests on a concrete pad, covered over by native landscape so as to appear to rest directly on the ground. Each pad would house a lighting fixture that illuminates the object from within. At night, the Sculpture becomes a beacon of light for Isla Negra.
